WRITING WITH CONFIDENCE:

WWC is a seven week online workshop created for folks ready to step into their identity as a writer. This class will punch procrastination in the face. It is a generative course - you will write in class, have weekly writing homework, and will submit up to ten pages of your own writing to be workshopped by your cohort. Each week you will workshop and provide feedback on peer submissions. In this class you will learn how to develop a sustainable writing process that will carry you beyond the workshop, learn how to name, explain, and replicate good writing, and start to chip away at all the things holding you back from showing up as the writer you want to be. You will not be allowed to preamble in this class. No “I'm not really a writer because” or “I haven't written” or “I could never write, apply, submit, share on social media etc etc” bullshit. Writers write, and good writers give compelling, intelligent feedback with grace and precision. WWC is a wonderful way to find a life-long writing community because the class is just as much about you as it is your cohort. You will be expected to participate in a daily group-chat with your peers that is focused on creative accountability, community support, and inspiration. This course has a strict no absences policy. For graduates of the Writing With Confidence course, Writing With Intention is a goal-focused class. It is for writers who are ready to complete a project. Whether that be submitting your work for publication, finishing a draft of your manuscript, querying agents, committing to sharing your writing on social media, or anything else with a clearly set goal — this class is for you. This course has a strict no absences policy.

The irony of leaving a class dedicated to writing and not being able to fully capture in words just how much this course did for my self-image and my confidence as a writer and human being (because those things are the same for me now!) is not lost on me. Time will forever be marked as BHC and AHC -- Before Haley's Class and After Haley's Class. BHC, I was sitting on a novel outline that I was too scared to write for over 2 years, too scared to even talk about with even my closest friends. AHC, I have written 40,000 words, redid my entire outline so that it actually makes sense, shared my work with my loved ones, and have a community of writers that I know will be my own personal cheerleaders for years to come. When people ask what I do now, I say I'm a writer. This class gave me the tools I need to be confident in my craft and kicked my procrastination and perfectionism in the ass. Writers can be dramatic, it’s in our nature. But I am not being dramatic when I say this class completely changed the trajectory of my life and my writing career. Before WWC, I was a year post-grad with a creative writing degree, yet I was hesitant to call myself a writer, had no writing community, and didn’t dare utter the words “I’m writing a book” (I thought that would be completely delusional). Now, after WWC, I know I am a writer, I am writing a book, and have thirteen best friends I can turn to as my writing community and beyond. I learned more about myself as a writer and gained more confidence in my craft these last seven weeks than I did in three years at a state university. This class was worth the investment and more. I signed up for Haley's Writing With Confidence Workshop on a whim hoping it would give me some wind in my sails as a writer, and maybe even encourage me to get started on the book I was considering writing. I've identified as a writer for close to ten years now — However, it wasn't until this past year that the idea of writing a full-blown book started simmering. Writing With Confidence is everything I needed to turn the many many notes of ideas in my phone into something I now know will become my first memoir. Writing non-fiction about my own life has always been scary for me, but it's something I've always felt called to do despite sometimes being paralyzed by self-doubt. I had been told by many writer friends to take Haley's class, but even their enthusiastic testimonials couldn't prepare me for the way these seven weeks changed me. I have wanted to write for as long as I can remember, jotting observations in a notebook at 11 and in my notes app at 27, but always always always stopped myself out of fear that I wouldn't be good enough. Taking Writing With Confidence was the best decision I have made in a long time. I came into this class thinking of writing as a hobby- I did not have a very established writing practice and only wrote when inspiration struck. Before I took this class, I had an idea. I had an idea that I could be a writer in another life, but for now it's a hobby. I had an idea for a book swirling around my head but it was just an idea and nothing more. And I had a raging case of imposter syndrome given to me by the imposter gods themselves. I have never made friends over the internet so eagerly and easily (and I had a tumblr in 2010 FFS). Before WWC, I looked voraciously for a local group of writers... any community I could clutch to craft and share my devotion to writing. I came up short and I am so glad I did. I haven’t been consistently writing for a few years and I haven’t taken any writing specific courses since college. I went into this class with the expectation that I would get back into my creative practice and have some writing prompts and structure in my corner. Writing classes have never not terrified me. Everyone is so cool, but like, in a way that doesn't look like trying and they all read the same books and write with the same pens! And they know all the words of ever and I'm just sitting here rhyming words with "fart" like a loser! I've been convinced that writing and being a person always comes easier to everyone else. But: I was suspicious I was using that weird mythology of "everyone else" to hold my creativity hostage. So: I signed up for Haley's class mentally prepared to roll my eyes at everything & pretend to be cool. But I never had to. Not once. I was never expected to be anyone other than myself, and everyone else did the same. And we all talked about how much and how hard we were trying! TRYING IS COOL, Y'ALL. Trying to write more and be more ourselves and put more of ourselves into the world is the whole point! Every single person taught me at least ten things about writing and twenty more about how to be a tenderhearted human being in the world. I wrote more than I have in so long, and my favorite things to write were comments and feedback on my classmate's beautiful work. Getting the chance to be in the room when someone is trying--really trying on purpose--and making themselves known out loud is the best thing I've ever been a part of, and you get to do that every week here. Haley is a generous teacher who is very adept at using time to everyone's advantage, and tailoring workshops so writers get the type of feedback that is most beneficial to them. The 7 weeks flew by! I didn’t expected to cultivate such strong community in the relatively short time we had but I’m leaving the class with a vibrant community of writers who are all rooting for each other. I came into the class hoping to generate more writing for the novel I’m working on and I did that! But I also left Haley’s class more confident that I can write a kick ass book. Writing With Confidence with Haley has given me writing tools, community, inspiration, and accountability, and maybe most importantly, I now have the confidence to claim the identity of "writer" for myself. This new confidence has been an immediate game-changer. After sharing writing with my classmates (which everyone in class gets to do) and receiving wonderful peer feedback, I felt motivated to submit my work to journals again and had three pieces accepted right away! Writing with Confidence was the best investment I have made in my writing and in myself. I came into this class apprehensive, as I have never shared my work in a classroom setting before. I have never felt so affirmed in a writing class. What I love most about Haley is that she sets strong feedback expectations and allows every student to decide what level of feedback they feel they want to receive and she also tailors every workshop session to what that specific writer needs. That differentiation allowed the class to give good, kind, constructive, and specific feedback. I loved how much this class emphasized community building in addition to celebrating good writing and I am so grateful for a new writing community to consistently share my work with in the future. I came into Haley's class a confident writer. But I wasn't sure how much reverence my current piece of work warranted and I was wary of letting anyone else hold it with me. Timidly, I took a chance and shared the work I was protective over. It was worth it. My writing gained a new life and I had a space where I could exercise courage while my piece is in its vulnerable stages. The fear of revealing this particular work is still there but I know I can still write despite the worry. And I have a small writing group that has already seen what I can do and is cheering me on.
